Sidi Chiker
Under the high patronage of His Majesty the King Mohammed VI, Prince of the Believers (Amir al-Mouminine), the first world get-together at Sidi Chiker of Sufism affiliates met from 10 to 12 September 2004, joining a great number of practitioners from different Sufi confraternities across the world, and Moroccan as well as foreign Sufism specialists. Upon this occasion His Majesty the King Mohammed VI addressed a letter to the participants:
« We were determined to grant Our High Solicitude to your forum which constitutes the first international get-together at Sidi Chiker, based on the mission We take on in Our capacity of Prince of the Believers and which confers upon Us the responsibility to oversee the religious affairs in Our Kingdom in all aspects in their fullest scope.
Our ancestors, Kings of Morocco, may Allah accord Them His blessing, when they sent messages to the individuals in charge of these confraternities referring to them as de Mourabitines (hermits), drawn from the Holy Koran and the Sunna; this term meaning withdrawal from the temptations of temporal life, striving to purify the mores of the human soul, in other words, the very best expressions of "jihad".
This is how they formed their deep-rooted affection for the Descendants of the Prophet among the faithful, built schools and libraries, spread the values of reconciliation and solidarity, put an end to racial and tribal disparities thanks to the cordial links initiated and the eradication of the aspects of exclusion inciting the faithful to practice emulation of boons and transcendence as opposed to profit by invoking the imperious modesty owed to Allah, the sole true Wealth and All Powerful Being..
Their influence from an educational and social standpoint is priceless, and upon this occasion three noble normative actions performed by Moroccan Sufis are deserving of mention: the first one is the support they lend to the legal imams in the performance of their duties while conserving the unity of the Malekite ritual and the Achaarite doctrine with the requisite observation and openness; the second action resides in delivering minds from the wishful thinking of the unwarranted quest for power, education for gratitude toward Allah and the rejection of all forms of egotism and tyranny, while the third action concerns the formation of a pioneering elite the ontological aspirations of which have never been in contradiction with their sincere patriotic feelings.
In today's world, Humanity above all needs to try to emphasize values of tolerance, solidarity, altruism and the rejection of the fiercest of egotisms. Muslims also need to breathe new life into their ideal moral values and actions in peaceful coexistence with others.
This objective is achievable only through tolerance which today is more necessary than ever to contribute and rectify the image of Islam, firstly among the practitioners of your faith and other beliefs and dogmatic rites. It is you, in your capacity as believers in spiritual trends rising above those of dogmas and ethnicities, who are capable of devoting your wisdom with the aim of enlightening spirits and purifying hateful, spiteful or ignorant souls marked all too much by confrontation and stubbornness.
Our political choice entails the strengthening of democratic practice regarding the management of public affairs in modern fashion and in integral compliance with our religion. To us it appears obvious that the freedom to organize and take initiatives as guaranteed by the law, makes it possible to liberate all the potential previously subject to apprehension, exclusion or monopolistic actions. Thanks to these equitable choices, nothing can any longer hinder good will initiatives justly aiming at the happiness and promotion of Mankind».
This first international get-together at Sidi Chiker of the affiliates of Sufism, organized by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs shall deal with four topics regarding " The foundation of Sufism and its current significance», « Sufism and the political environment», «Sufism: ethics and society» and «Sufism in daily life ». Imminent professors and university specialists of international renown have contributed to the academic success of this first get-together.
